Talks & Teaching

I’ve been an instructor at Grub Street, a Teaching Scholar at Muse & the Marketplace, Guest Faculty at the Pine Manor Solstice MFA in Creative Writing, and a Guest Lecturer at Emerson College Precollege Creative Writers Workshop. My presentations and classes range from an in-depth look at an element of craft to demystifying literary magazines. In a beginner class, I introduce writers to the publishing process and behind-the-scenes operations. A more advanced class explores into the unwritten submission guidelines based on editor interviews and data-gathering. Topics I’ve taught include:

  • Tell, Don’t Show
  • Sizing Up Your Publishing Prospects: What Do Literary Magazines *Really* Want?
  • What Literary Magazine Are You?

Moderating Panels and Literary Conversations

As a moderator of literary magazine and writing-related conversations, I facilitated a panel of editors series at Porter Square Books for five years. I designed and moderated the following panel topics at the Association of Writing Programs conference:

  •  How Literary Magazines Cultivate Inclusivity (2019);
  • Tips and Tricks from the Trenches: Lit Mag Editors Share Funding, Staffing, and Operational Strategies for Survival (2017);
  • How to Teach Literary Magazines in the Classroom and Why (2015), which was recorded and is available in podcast form here.

Additionally, I led author-included, community-wide discussions for the Needham Diversity and Discussion Bookclub that used the topics raised these books as the basis for an introspective conversation intended to promote social change:

  • Don’t Ask Me Where I’m From, by Jennifer De Leon (2021)
  • The Body Papers, by Grace Talusan (2020)
