Biography

Jenn Scheck-Kahn is a writer, literary entrepreneur, educator, and activist. An early interest in fiction earned her placements in contests hosted by The Atlantic and Glimmer Train, among others and drew her to the Bennington Writing Seminars where she received an MFA in Fiction Writing. Her short fiction and personal essays about infertility and early motherhood have appeared in a number of outlets, including The Washington PostCreative Nonfiction, and The Offing.

While volunteering at a literary magazine, she was inspired to help journals improve their operations by applying skills she developed in a former tech career. With the help of her spouse, she created Tell It Slant, a community-based approach to managing the creative manuscripts that writers send to journals for publication. A second service that she built, Journal of the Month, continues today to connect writers with high-quality print literary journals published throughout the United States.

Her expertise in literary magazines led to teaching classes and moderating panels about them, in addition to the seminars she already taught on prose writing. Realizing that her relationships with editors allowed unique access and influence, she authored collaborative articles in Poets & Writers Magazine and Creative Nonfiction about the persistent, traditional barriers to publication for BIPOC writers. She moderated panels on the subject as well.

Her activism cultivates inclusive practices in her community where she has served as a Town Meeting Member and co-chair of the Needham Special Education Parent Advisory Council. She founded Lunch Equity Project, raising over $25,000 for food-insecure families in 2021.
